Safely Eradicating Foxes for London homeowners

Due to their adaptability and the availability of food, foxes are now more common in some London areas than in the surrounding countryside.

Urban foxes can be a problem generally during mating season when the screaming and barking of the vixens can be distressing and often disturbs sleep.

Foxes are also territorial and will scent mark their area with strong smelling urine and faeces, especially if it is particularly important to them, such as near their “earth” (this is the burrow or den). In urban environments foxes will often make their earth under sheds, in cellars or quiet overgrown areas of your garden.

While they usually leave cats and dogs alone, foxes may be tempted by smaller pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens if they are not adequately protected. If the animals are kept outside, the easiest way to ensure their safety is to line the bottom of their cage or hutch with chicken wire that the foxes cannot penetrate.

Foxes do carry some diseases (including toxoplasmosis in their faeces) and worms, though they don’t carry rabies or suffer from distemper, despite commonly held beliefs – Britain has been free of rabies for many years.  They are known to suffer from Weil’s disease and Mange (which is a skin disease caused by parasitic mites) that can transfer to pets.

Should foxes be a problem in your area, it is essential that careful regard is taken to all relevant laws and health and safety legislation, etc. Poisons are not a legal or acceptable solution for this pest and can be very dangerous if misused.

While foxes are not a protected species as such, there are regulations surrounding the humane removal of these animals.  At Dyno-Pest, our professional technicians are fully-trained and aware of the relevant laws regarding the elimination of pest foxes.

Pest Control for Grey Squirrels in London

Grey squirrels were introduced from America in the late 19th century. They are larger and more robust than the native red species and able to digest acorns (which the red squirrel can’t), thus enabling them to take advantage of areas of woodland to greater advantage than the native variety.

While grey squirrels can cause considerable damage to trees with their habit of stripping the bark in the early summer. It is the damage they can do to your home that is of prime concern.

Squirrels breed twice a year, in late autumn/early spring and again in the summer, having between 1 and 5 young per litter.  They build nests, called dreys, from twigs, moss and other soft materials, typically located high in trees. However if they are able to access your roof void or loft, they will often choose this as their nest site. Not only do they create noise scurrying about above your head, but they will tear up your loft insulation to create their nest. Being rodents, they need to gnaw to keep the length of their ever-growing teeth at bay. Therefore, they will chew wooden roof beams and stored items and sometimes even strip the insulation from electrical cables causing a major fire hazard.

Squirrels only need a space the size of their head to gain access and so diligence is required when looking for their entry point. If this is not found and sealed, the squirrels will continue to present a problem. However, it is essential to ensure that there are no squirrels (or other birds or animals) in the loft before the holes are blocked. Aside from being cruel (and illegal) to trap them in this way, they can cause further damage as they try to escape or nasty smells and infestations of insects should they be left to die and decompose there. If they die in a water tank, the decomposing body can contaminate the water causing illness if the water is used for drinking.

Grey squirrels are not a protected species, but it is necessary for care to be taken that all regulations and health and safety requirements are adhered to when dealing with these pests.

Dyno-Pest’s fully-trained professional pest technicians are familiar with all the relevant laws and able to carry out the necessary arrangements with due care.  They will also be able to advise on methods of proofing and carry these out where possible.
