When the cold spell bites…

5 pests that could infest your building as the temperature drops.

  1. Cockroaches. These hardy pests move indoors during autumn and winter to find warmth and escape the cold. They only require 3 things to survive; warm shelter, food and water, with the need for water being much greater than food.
  2. Rats and mice. Unfortunately, the winter weather sends mice and rats in doors to search for food. Given that a mouse can squeeze through a hole as small as the eraser on the tip of a pencil, a rat with just a slightly bigger space, no business can afford to become complacent.
  3. Bedbugs. Alas, when it gets colder these blood sucking creatures become more resilient. They can survive without a blood meal much longer at cooler temperatures – up to a year or more at 55°F or less. In temperature controlled buildings, they can last 2 to 6 months.
  4. Ants. Persistent rain floods their nesting sites. They are then forced to go in search of dry ground and, that could mean your home or business becomes the target for these resilient insects.
